Help us celebrate Ruth! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Ruth.
Ruth Ann Meiborg, 63, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2024 at her home in Roscoe, Illinois, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She had such a positive outlook and a horrendous desire to beat it. Ruth was born November 25, 1960 to Fay Sr. and Nadine (Biggart) Meiborg in Beloit, Wisconsin. She attended Kinnikinnick and Prairie Hill grade schools and then graduated from Hononegah High School, class of 1979.
In her early years she was heavily involved in 4-H. Her mother made sure all of her children were well rounded and could fend for themselves. So many projects...cooking, sewing, gardening...Ruth put all of that knowledge to good use over the years...one of which resulted in volunteering her time each year to the Roscoe Fall Festival. She was responsible for the homestyle food at the Lions tent at the festival, helping out the snowmobile group that then donates the money to a special cause each year.
Ruth was in various bowling leagues over the years and was actually a pretty good bowler. She eventually had to retire from the sport due to several different bone breakages she's had over the years. That girl was pretty unlucky, but had a village of friends who were always there for her and would do anything she needed. She was so blessed!
Ruth had a few jobs early in life, before starting what would be her lifetime "career" with the Whiffle Tree in Roscoe. She worked there over 28 years, starting as a bartender and server, and ended up being the manager, and doing it all. She LOVED her job, and every customer that came in. In 2016 she was voted as one of the best bartenders in the Rockford area! She has built so many invaluable friendships from this job, and this is what has kept her going throughout her cancer battle. She worked nearly every day through all of her treatments up until the very last day saying, "My People" are what keeps me going".
Ruth was a huge Packer fan, and also a Cubs fan. She had a wonderful group of friends she went camping with and also did extensive traveling with. One of her favorite places she talked about was Cuba. She also loved her slot machines and was very, very lucky with them!
Ruth never married, or had children, however it seems that the whole town of Roscoe has become her extended family, along with her Whiffle Tree family. This girl was loved!
Ruth's biggest accomplishment, and proudest moment in her life, was paying off her home. She was very proud being able to be a homeowner, and always took great care of it.
Ruth is survived by her brother, Fay Jr. (Jackie) and their two sons, Jeffrey (Amber) Meiborg and Brian Meiborg; nephew, William Derry, Jr.; and sister, Shelly Shamp and her three children, Jason (Susan) Shamp and Joseph and Elizabeth Shamp. Ruth was preceded in death by both of her parents and her oldest sister, Rhonda Derry who just passed in 2023.
We would like to thank Loyola Hospital in Chicago for all of their great care and compassion. And also to the UW Health/Carbone Cancer Center in Rockford.
Ruth was loyal, hard-working, and dedicated to "My People". She will be missed dearly by so many.
Her wishes were to be cremated and have no funeral. A memorial celebration will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at the Roscoe VFW, 11385 2nd Street, Roscoe, IL 61073 from 1:00pm to 6:00pm. In lieu of flowers, any memorials can be made to the family for a fund to be established at a later date. To share a memory or condolence, visit honquestfh.com
