Ruth F. Bowles, 98, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2024, at her residence. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at the Mt. Enon Church Cemetery, Stage Coach Rd., Baconton, Georgia, with Steve Whatley officiating. There will be a visitation for friends and family at the Bowles' Family Home (339 Lumpkin Street Cuthbert) from 2:00 - 4:00 PM.
Ruth ("Miss Ruthie") Bowles was born on January 24, 1926, in Wrens, Georgia, the daughter of the late Byron Bailey Florence and the late Louise Sturkey Florence. She attended Wesleyan Women's College in Macon, Georgia and then the University of Georgia. In 1945 she married Jesse G. Bowles, Jr. Survivors include a son, Jesse (Judy) G. Bowles, III of Cuthbert, Georgia, a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsey" (Ricky) Chastain of Athens, Georgia, 6 grandchildren, Martin (Stephen) Yoder, Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Lyle) Ross, Jesse G. Bowles, IV (deceased), Hoyt "Chas" (Susannah) Chastain, Lucy Chastain, and Elizabeth (Zach) Berg and 10 great grandchildren, Amelia, Ricky and Brooks Chastain, Emma and Marshall Yoder, Becca, Lucille and Alexandra Ross, and Lily, and Woods Berg.
In 1946 she moved to Cuthbert, Georgia, where Mr. Bowles opened his law practice. She was a member of the Cuthbert First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Winsome Sunday School Class. In her later years she attended Cuthbert United Methodist Church. She was an avid golfer, bridge player, gardner and was affectionately known as "ma'ma".
