Russell Loren Hughes, 92, died peacefully Friday, May 17,2024, surrounded by family at his home on the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix in East Jordan, MI
He was born on September 4, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Russell Lowell and Marie (Omland) Hughes. He moved to East Jordan with his parents in 1947 and worked the family farm on M66 in the Jordan River Valley. He graduated from East Jordan High School in 1948, at the age of 15. He then attended Michigan State University and graduated with a degree in Business in 1952.
He started his career at General Motors as a cost accounting clerk in Saginaw, MI in 1952 and progressed through many roles retiring after a 40+ year career as a Finance Executive for GM. While at GM, he worked at multiple GM Manufacturing locations throughout the Midwest and West Coast.
After meeting Kay Donna Sinclair of East Jordan, MI in high school, they were married in December of 1951. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Kay; his sister Marlynn (Garold) Myers; five sons, Daniel (Lisa), Thomas, Douglas (Katy), Robert, and Charles. He was a very proud grandparent to 8 grandchildren; Ian, Paul, Aaron, Rachel (Vince), Jason, Benjamin, Samuel and Joseph. Creating a special place in his heart were 2 Great Grandchildren, Gus and Anthony.
After his retirement from GM, Russ and Kay enjoyed a fantastic retirement for 32 years, spending summers in their home on the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix and winters in Bonita Springs, Fl at the Worthington County Club. Upon his retirement, Russell/Loren (he went by both names) with Kay by his side, revived the trout business his father had and delighted in having many children and their parents catch their first rainbow trout at the Jordan Valley Trout Pond. He raised trout for catching at the pond, and stocking local private and public ponds for the next 25 years. He also took great pride in farming 40 acres and producing wonderful vegetables, corn, potatoes et al and sold it at local farmers markets and at his 'honor' vegetable stand on M66 at the farm for most of the years of his retirement.
Funeral Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in East Jordan, MI on Saturday, June 8 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing in Russell Loren's name to either the First Presbyterian Church of East Jordan or the Charlevoix County Foundation.
