Russell retired as a Captain for the City and County of Honolulu Fire Department after 20 years of service in 2010. Prior to the Fire department he worked for 8 years with Hawaiian Homes. He graduated from Kaimuki High school in 1973, obtained his Bachelor's degree in Human Development from UH-Manoa, and an AS degree in Fire Science from HCC.
Russell loved being with friends, surfing, playing and listening to music, working out, and in his younger years enjoyed playing volleyball. He was called RD by his closest surfing buddies and looked forward to surf trips in Indonesia and other places. Due to numerous injuries, Russ was sidelined from surfing but always focused on returning to the ocean that he loved.
Russ enjoyed being with his daughter and was a doting and dedicated father supporting all her school and extra-curricular activities. After retirement, Russ spent his time playing drums, surfing, working out, chauffeuring his daughter around, cleaning the house, and giving their family pets amazing lives. Russ was a loving best friend and companion to his wife. The Covid pandemic was an easy transition for him because it gave him an excuse to remain at home and play his drums. He enrolled in online drum lessons with Rich Stitzel - Drum Mantra. He would practice almost all day working on his technique and timing.
A celebration of life will be held at Nuuanu Mortuary on August 19, 2024. Visitation is at 10am and service is at 10:30am. Casual attire.
