Russell Peter Byriel, 82, of Madrid, passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at his home with his family at his side.
Russell was born August 10, 1939, in Audubon, IA, son of Peter and Anna (Sorensen) Byriel. He received his education in Audubon and then entered the United States Air Force. On February 20, 1960, he married Winifred Balson while he was stationed in England. In July of 1961 he returned to the United States and worked various jobs. Most of his life he worked as a welder and retired from Custom Steel in Ames.
He shared his passion of woodworking with those he loved. His artistic creations are in churches, family, and friend’s homes. He loved making cradles, doll houses, guns, and swords for his grandkids; you name it, he made it. Racing, helping his sons’ race, watching NASCAR, Hawkeye football, and the Spurs were what he enjoyed with great intensity. He was always up for a practical joke and sitting back and watching it unfold.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Art, Kenneth, Marvin, Alice, Harvey and Donald
Russell is survived by his wife Winifred, children, LaRayne (Bob) Beetler of Kelley, IA, Russell E. (Sandy) Byriel of Ankeny, IA and Jon (Leah) Byriel of Madrid, seven grandchildren, Tyler (Ben), Cody, Morgan, Hannah, Katie, Caia, and Logan, and one brother Glenn Byriel of Boone, IA.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m Thursday, May 19, 2022, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Madrid. Burial services will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, with fellowship to follow at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.
