Ruben Robledo Herrera died peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 25, 2020after a brief illness. He was 71 years old. The youngest of three children, Ruben was born on February 21, 1949 in Oxnard, CA to Jesus and Margaret Herrera. Ruben graduated from Oxnard High School and Ventura College.
Ruben was proud of his roots, having grown up in the Colonia neighborhood, and he dedicated his entire career to support the children of this County. Employed by the Oxnard Boys and Girls Club for 35 years, Ruben's quick wit and quiet humor gained him the respect of all who walked through those doors. With a Pepsi in hand, Ruben could be found coaching, reffing, making his infamous signs, decorating the club for whatever holiday it was, taking photos, and helping a child or parent. His ability to create a refuge for children and a welcoming environment for their parents, resonates still within the community through the innumerable friendships that were created on his watch. People walked in as strangers and left as friends and family.
Ruben also worked for the County of Ventura for about 14 years, working at Edward J Almanza Gymnasium and at Child Protective Services, where he continued to build a legacy of care and compassion. Ruben's impact on the lives of all those who knew him is indescribable and he will be sorely missed.
Ruben was a humble, loving, and nurturing man who embraced his family, especially his grandchildren, with unconditional love. Ruben is survived by his loving wife and bestfriend of 45 years Stella Herrera, brother Robert (Basilia) Herrera, daughter Mitzie, sons Joe (Christine) and Angel (Adriana) Soto. He also leaves behind his grandchildren;Joseph, Samira, Jocelin, Savanah, Angel, Ashley, Heather, Karyssa, Kayla, Savanah H, Niquee, Zach, Shelton, and 14 great-grandchildren. Ruben is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews and dear friends. Ruben is predeceased by his parents and his brother Henry Herrera.
