Ruben "Platano" Duran, 74, of Merkel passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 4, 2021 at Hendrick Hospice Care surrounded by his family.
He was born November 20, 1947 in Merkel to Joe Duran, Sr. and Encarnacion Calderon Duran. Ruben attended Merkel schools and enlisted in the U.S. Army and fought during the Vietnam War. He was an active member of the VFW.
Ruben Loved to dance, listen to music, being outdoors and spending time with his friends and family. He never had an enemy and was always able to make new friends.
Ruben is survived by his son Tony Duran and wife Lisa of Abilene; brothers Joe Duran and wife Marie of Dittmer, Missouri and Frank Garcia of Abilene; sisters Virginia Biera and husband Tony of Merkel and Maggie Saldana of San Antonio; four grandchildren Blake and Cheyanne Morris of Lubbock, Hunter Nowlin of Tampa, Florida, Gavin Duran of Abilene, and Corey and Alyssia Hartness of Abilene; five great grandchildren; and sever nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00PM Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Starbuck Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM Thursday, July 15, 2021 at Starbuck Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. A reception will follow the burial service at the VFW.
