Roy Albert Whatley made the transition from this life to the next where his life really began on September 27, 2022. He was 88 years old. Roy was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Norman Whatley, parents, Harold and Myrtle Whatley, and older twin brother, Holt Whatley. He is survived by his wife, Linda Mayes-Whatley, son, Michael David Whatley/Kassie, granddaughters, Amber and Alicia Whatley, twin brother, Robert Whatley/Marge, older twin brother, Harold Whatley/Jan, sister-in-law, Libbie Whatley, nieces and nephews. Roy always enjoyed telling people he had three twin brothers. He and Robert were twins. Harold and Holt were twins and were three years older than Roy and Robert. They all grew up in Vicksburg, MS. Roy received a Civil Engineering Degree from Georgia Institute of Technology. He worked with the Corps of Engineers and later was a charter member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He worked with EPA until his retirement. After retirement, Roy served as senior advisor for Whatley Enterprises USA, Inc. until the time of his death. Roy served as an officer in the Engineering Division in the U.S. Army in Germany. Roy became a member of Olive Springs Baptist Church in 1971. He was very active in all aspects of the church program. He served as a deacon/chairman of the deacons, and minister for the seniors. He sang in the choir, and was a member of the Sweet Spirit Singers, a group that ministered to residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. When Olive Springs Church became a part of Eastside Baptist Church, Roy completed his term as a deacon there. He became involved in the various activities for seniors as well as becoming a member of the choir and continuing with the Sweet Spirit Singer. Roy was a member of the East Cobb Gideon Camp. He enjoyed all aspects of the work of the Gideons. He especially enjoyed praying with the other men on Saturday mornings and passing out bibles to students. In addition to all the other activities and jobs in which he had been involved, Roy found the time to be a world traveler. A funeral service will be held 11 am Monday, October 3, 2022 in the chapel of Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna. The family will receive friends from 10 am to 11 am at the funeral home.
