Roy E. Pannell, 79, of Loogootee, Indiana passed away on Friday February 24, 2023 surrounded by his family at Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Center in Jasper, Indiana.
He was born on October 21, 1943, in Bedford, Indiana to Francis Earl and Mary Louise (Colburn) Pannell. Roy married Nancy Lee on August 19, 1967.
Roy was a United States Air Force Veteran. He retired from NSWC Crane where he served for over 30 years including 3 1/2 years in the U.S Air Force Crash Rescue. Roy is also retired from The American Federation of Government Employees where he served for 11 years, as National Vice President of the 6th District (KY., IN., OH). Roy has served the State of Indiana as a Safety Consultant for the Bureau of Safety Training & Education, Indiana Department of Labor. After retiring 4 times, he started U Safe, Safety Consultation/Training & Outreach Ministry - The Way, serving as a safety consultant for local residents.
Roy was a previously member of or served in a leadership role in the following groups, Little League, Martin County Emergency Unit, Loogootee PTA, (President & State Regional Vice President), Martin County Humane Society, he was appointed by Governor to serve on the formation of a Four County Vocational Rehabilitation net work for our area, formerly Four Rivers, in which the Loogootee Red Door was a part, additionally, he was one of the few selected to oversee the first free election in South African History in 1994.
While working at Crane Roy became very active with AFGE Local 1415 and held most all positions in the Local, most notable President. He served as a lobbyist for 25 years; he has effectively worked with both political parties at a national and state level.
Roy's lifelong love of sports included his love of St. Louis Cardinals, Loogootee Lion Fan, and the Colts. He will be remembered by years of fireworks displays on the 4th of July and inflatables, Christmas, and Halloween. Roy provided years of fun and entertainment for friends and family and will be missed by all that knew him.
Roy believed the most important leadership position he had worked in has been in the church, The Shoals UMC, Loogootee Christian Church, Parkview Christian Church, and the Antioch Christian Church. Roy would say, "I'm a Christian and most proud of it."
He is preceded in death by his parents, Francis Earl and Mary Louise Pannell, his son, Michael Rex Pannell, his siblings, Don Howard (Susan) Pannell, Kenneth Earl Pannell, and Thomas R. Pannell.
Roy is survived by his wife Nancy Pannell of Loogootee, his children, Nanette Michelle (Aaron) Hembree of Loogootee, Angela Louise Pannell - Dillon of Odon, Cori Lee (Tim) Lukomski of Loogootee, his grandchildren, Meagan Louise Friede, Gregory Scott Pannell, Tanner Skye Akles, Frankie Michael (Talitha) Dillon, Isaac Jaron Dillon, Lilian Rose Lukomski, Great- Grandchildren, Areanna Nicole Friede, Zoey Renee Friede, Nevaeh Talitha Dillon, his daughter - in - law, Michelle Pannell of Loogootee, sister-in- law, Jewell Pannell of Bloomington, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday March 2, 2023, at 11:00 A.M at Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee with Bro. Alfred Helms to officiate. Burial and Military rights will follow at Goodwill Cemetery in Loogootee, Indiana.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday March 1, 2023, from 4:00 P.M until 8:00 P.M at Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee, Indiana.
