Ronald Day Veazey died peacefully on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 83.
Born in Memphis on January 18, 1938, he was the son of Willis Patrum and Ganel Gold Veazey. Raised in Coldwater, Mississippi, he graduated at age 17 from Coldwater High School where he was an exceptional athlete, lettering in multiple sports as the starting quarterback and pitcher for his high school football and baseball teams. He attended Mississippi State University on a baseball scholarship and also was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. As a member of the Army National Guard, in January of 1958 he attended basic training at Ft. Bliss, Texas. While there, he was a baseball standout leading the team to their first Army championship. He returned home in September 1958 to marry his high school sweetheart Marianne Moore Wilson of Senatobia. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Mississippi and was awarded a BBA in 1959.
Thinking that he would return to his families land in Tate County and farm with his family, his father encouraged him to utilize his business education and strong work ethic to pursue a career in business and financial markets. His first job was as a claims adjustor for Crawford & Co. in both Lake Charles, LA and in Memphis. He was hired by Nationwide Insurance Company to establish its claims departments in various cities which ultimately led him to Jackson in 1965. He became a stock broker in 1969 and later partnered with Ken Toler in January of 1977 to open A.G. Edwards & Sons in Jackson where their prowess and expertise in the financial markets created unparalleled
success. Their wonderful business partnership would thrive for 40 years.
Ron's template to being an honorable and good man began with his devotion to living a Christ-centered life from a young age. A lifelong Methodist, he attended Coldwater Methodist Church as a youth. He and his wife were early members of Christ United Methodist Church, Jackson where he was active in every facet of church leadership, growth, and service. He taught Sunday School, was active in MYF, and when the
new church was built on Old Canton Road, he was chairman of the trustees. He led the development of the church's establishment and installation of their first and current
columbarium located at the south entrance to the church.
Ron loved God, his country, and his family. He was a great steward of everything that God had given him. He had a servant's heart, was passionate about his friendships and business relationships, and lived the example set for his children and grandchildren of walking with Christ. He attended a men's group called the "Tuesday Morning Boys" fellowship every week for over 40 years where he developed special friendships as the 25 to 30 men navigated life together. He was also devoted to serving several ministries in the Jackson community over many years. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Hope House, Mustard Seed, and was an early board member for Young Life Jackson. There are years of indelible and happy memories spent with family and friends at their home, which he and Marianne built on Lake Cavalier, and where he loved to entertain, fish, and enjoy the unbelievable beauty of Lake Cavalier!
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Petie Veazey, III and Jerry Veazey.
He is survived by his wife Marianne with whom they blissfully laughed and danced through life together for 63 years; also his adored children, Ginger Veazey Tramel (Mike), of Jackson, Ron Veazey, Jr. (Michelle), of Madison, and Eason Veazey Iburg (Matt), of Madison; and foster son for over 50 years, Harry Liggett (Barbara), of Vicksburg; sister, Gay Veazey Williams (Mike) of Memphis; in-laws, Betsy Lowrey Veazey, Roberta Wilson Mayfield, Tom Wilson, Jr. (Sherry), all from Senatobia and Harriet Wilson Goshorn (Neumon), Memphis; grandchildren: Veazey Tramel Reindl (Joe), Robert Tramel (Sarah), Mary Garner Veazey Rees (Charles), Day Veazey, Will Veazey, Jake Veazey, Sullivan Miller, Matthew Iburg, Blake Liggett, and Rebecca Liggett Miller (Eric); great grandchildren, Stella Reindl and Emma Liggett, and a host of other relatives and many beloved friends.
A private family service was held at the Columbarium at Christ United Methodist Church, Jackson on Sunday March 7th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Coldwater United Methodist Church, 558 Central Avenue, Coldwater, MS 38618.
The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation to his caregivers: Michaela, Lee, Rae, Catina, and Angie, for their exceptional and loving care provided to him and his family over the past years.
