Ronald Hudson Moore
1936 - 2021
Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, Ronald Hudson Moore was born
August 23, 1936, in Des Moines, Iowa, to parents Marcus Leslie Moore and Dolores Dethea
Laughlin Moore. Ron is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters, Carrie Moore, Deborah Moore
and Lisa (Bret) Goodpaster; and twin grandsons, Sam and River Goodpaster.
Ron graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines in 1954, then furthered his
education earning a B.S. degree in Ceramic Engineering from Iowa State University in 1958.
Upon graduating, Ron was employed by Owens-Illinois, Inc., in Toledo, OH., as an engineer in
glass furnace design and glass technology. He remained with the company until 1980,
previously having been promoted to Regional Batch and Furnace Engineer. Ron also worked
for Ball Corporation (1980-1987) in Muncie, Ind., as Chief Furnace Design Engineer and was
Technical Director for Henry F. Teichmann, Inc., (1987-2001) in McMurray, Pa.
During Ron's career with the Glass Container/Glass Technology Industry, he obtained patents
in the field, traveled extensively and had some extended work assignments. While with
Owens-Illinois and Ball Corporation, he attended seminars, conferences and worked
cooperatively with glass plants throughout Europe. His work with Henry F. Teichmann involved
glass furnace design and setting up furnace departments in Jamaica, the Philippines, Mexico
and Anyang, China.
Early in his career, he served in the U.S. Army as a Critical Skills Specialist, after having
received basic training in Ft. Knox, Ky. Ron served in the Army Reserves until 1966, when he
was honorably discharged.
Amid his service to his country and his professional career, Ron married the love of his life,
Shirley Louise Clayton, in 1962, and they started their family. He was happiest when he could
be with his family and with the many friends who became important to him during his lifetime.
While Ron's frequent traveling took him away from home, in his spare time, he loved tinkering
with various projects and boating. This became a family activity, as many hours were spent
cruising on rivers and Lake Erie. Ron also enjoyed photography, music, traveling with family
and friends and golf.
Ron was a lifelong advocate for the Special Needs community working to help promote
learning and opportunity. He was an enthusiastic spectator during the Special Olympics
games, dance events and community bowling league.
Ron retired in 2001, and he and Shirley moved to The Villages, Florida. After retiring, he used
much of his time helping others through ministries offered at New Covenant United Methodist
Church. Ron was treasurer and record keeper for the Men's Prayer Breakfast for 18 years. In
addition, he worked with the Helping Hands Ministry that assists persons needing homes and
could frequently be found working in the church kitchen when needed. Together with Shirley,
he served on numerous leadership committees within the church.
Ron will be missed by his family, his church and the many friends he made throughout the
years. A memorial service will be held at New Covenant United Methodist Church on
Thursday, May 20, 2021 at 11am with internment following the service.
