Roger Wayne Collins, of Hagerstown, passed away on June 3, 2020 peacefully at Doey's House in Hagerstown, MD. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Alice Collins Poel. He is survived by his wife Ellen, to whom he was married for 55 years, as well as his daughter Maureen Collins Margevich and her husband Douglas, his son-in-law, Michael Poel, and three grandchildren, Loran and Susan Margevich and Christian Poel. He served as an officer in the US Army, attaining the rank of Major. He served in Vietnam as a chemical officer, receiving the Bronze Star and 11 Air Medals, including two for valor. One of these was awarded when he saved the lives of his comrades from a minefield by pulling them into a hovering helicopter. He and Ellen moved to Hagerstown in 1994, when they bought Howard's Art and Frames. They later sold the business in 2017. Roger volunteered at many organizations, most recently as a tax preparer for the Washington County Commission on Aging. Every year he processed 300 or more tax returns for senior citizens. He was a faithful parishioner of St. John's Episcopal Church. The memorial service will be announced at a later date.
