Rodney Fiske Du Bois, longtime resident of Hanover, NH passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, December 11th, while recovering from surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA. Rod was 84.
Rod was born in Goshen, NY to Floyd and Hilda Du Bois. The oldest of three siblings, Rod lived with his family in Bogota, Columbia before returning to the United States to attend high school at Northfield Mt. Herman and college at Dartmouth. Rod was a member of the soccer and track teams at Dartmouth, as well as the Navy ROTC. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1957 and received his MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, where he was a Tuck Scholar, in 1958.
Rod served in the United States Navy as a communications officer, rising to the rank of Lieutenant before departing to embark on an illustrious business career. Following several executive positions in New York City, Rod's distinguished business career took him to Honolulu, Hawaii where he served as Executive Vice President at C. Brewer. He founded an international agribusiness with Alexander and Baldwin, facilitating the development of large-scale agricultural projects in countries around the world including Iran, Sudan, and Thailand. Rod returned to Hanover in 1978 to become an Adjunct Professor at Tuck for several years while serving as Managing Director for investment banking firm Warburg Paribas Becker. Subsequently, he pursued a number of successful entrepreneurial efforts in the cable and real estate industries. For over two decades, he managed Keaau Macademia orchards, a farming corporation for Mauna Loa macadamia nuts.
While Rod was successful in business, family and friends were always his most important priority. He was married to the love of his life, Carol, for over fifty years. Often, those closest to him looked to Rod for wisdom, advice, and guidance when faced with important decisions. He had a passion for nature conservancy, birding, and fine art. When he wasn't watching his grandchildren in performances or athletics, he could often be found researching new investments, reading the New York Times or devouring a good spy novel.
He is survived by his wife Carol; children Sabrina Du Bois DeFilippis (Robert), Monique Sofen (Alan), Karen Du Bois and Stephen Du Bois (Nisha); grandchildren Nicholas DeFilippis, William and Jessica Sofen, Kira and Owen Smith, Leela, Mara and Priya Du Bois; siblings Richard Du Bois and Gertrude Muramoto; and numerous nieces and nephews.
