Rodney 'Rod' Apida, 83, resident of River Grove, IL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 26, 2024, in the comfort of his daughter's home in Aiken, SC, surrounded by his children. Husband of Sharon (Longstreet) Apida.
Left to cherish his memory are his children Barbara La Barbera Aiken, SC, Jo Apida, O'Fallon, IL, James (Michelle) Apida, Aiken, SC. Stepsons Scott (Ellen) Pasterz, Antioch, IL, Marc (Linda) Pasterz, Franklin Park, IL and Michael (Kellie) Pasterz, Franklin Park, IL; dearest Papa to grandchildren, Kristin, Jeremy, Melissa, Ryan, Grace, Michael, Ceejae, Marina, Peytin, Atalie and great-grandson Micah.
Rod's career began as a Heating and Cooling Estimator and retired as Building Commissioner from the Village of River Grove. Rod was a dedicated football official for over 25 years, renowned for his mentorship to both young and seasonal officials. Known for his selflessness, he often requested to work on lower-level assignments alongside newer officials, ensuring their development and success. Throughout his career, Rod officiated numerous Illinois High School Association (IHSA) football playoff games, earning the respect and admiration of his fellow officials. He was a proud member of the Athletic Officials Association, Rod's contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into their Hall of Fame in 2014. Rod most enjoyed spending quality time with his family and friends at their summer home by the lake, where he enjoyed his favorite pastime of fishing.
Rod was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Helen (Kaczmarczyk) Apida, and his son Steven James Apida.
Celebration of Life will be held at D'Agostino's, 3131 N. Thatcher Avenue, River Grove, IL, on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at noon.
