On Saturday, March 20, 2021, Roberto Ramiro Avitia Jr., devoted husband, and father of three children passed away at age 67.
Roberto was born on October 23, 1953, in Harlingen, TX., to Roberto Ramiro Sr. and Enedina (Flores) Avitia. He graduated Cum Laude with his Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement from Pan American University in 1974.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years of marriage, Elizabeth Limon Avitia; his sons, Roberto Ramiro III, William Erik, and Orlando Omar, and their spouses; his brother, Rolando Avitia; his sisters, Sonia Mussett, Yvette Avitia; and his five grandchildren.
Roberto was preceded in death by his father, Roberto Sr., and his mother, Enedina; his sister, Yolanda (Avitia) Torrez; and his mother-in-law, Esther Limon.
Roberto was employed by the Brownsville Police Department for 36 years. During his tenure, he received numerous letters of commendation for his accomplishments in the Criminal Investigation Division. In 2004, he was appointed to Police Commander and was assigned the rank of Commander of the Professional Standard Command in 2006. Roberto retired from BPD in July 2011. In addition to his career with the Police Department, Roberto also worked part-time for the United States Customs Service Inspector, United States Marshalls Service, and for Sunrise Mall.
Roberto Ramiro Avitia, Jr. was an active member of the community. He taught Sunday School at both Temple Emmanuel Assemblies of God Church and the International Christian Center. He also served as a board member of the Iglesia Principe de Paz. Roberto volunteered his time with many different clubs and organizations. He was a graduate of Leadership Brownsville and was a coach of both bowling and little league. He was also on the board of directors for the Brownsville Men's Bowling Association and the Boys Club. In recent years, Roberto was President of the Mr. & Mrs. Club, Mr. Amigo Association, and The Gathering of the Eagles.
Roberto was an avid collector and curator of sports memorabilia. He was passionate about football?especially the Dallas Cowboys. A thoughtful and selfless person, Roberto would spend hours searching online to find the perfect personalized gifts for his loved ones. Known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and compassionate spirit, Roberto was always one to give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need.
A public viewing will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a service of remembrance at 6:00 p.m on Friday, March 26th, 2021, at the Brownsville Sports Park, 1000 Sports Park Blvd, Brownsville, Texas 78526. A graveside ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for memorial donations to be made under his name to Amigos Del Valle www.advrgv.org
