Robert D. Young, 78, of Penacook passed away at his home on December 4, 2020. Born on January 21, 1942 in Dover, NH the son of Donald and Hazel (Smith) Young.
Bob had a passion for being a firefighter, and it began during his time in the Navy, where he served as an Aircraft and Structural firefighter. He was a hard worker and reached his goal of becoming a Chief, as he served as Battalion Chief of Concord Fire Department. He was part of Concord Fire Department, where he served his community for 28 years. He held many positions throughout his time as a firefighter, such as a NH State Deputy Forest Fire Warden for 21 years, and Recruit School Instructor with NH Fire Standards and Training for 13 years.
His former co-worker, Captain Jeffrey Stone said it best when he wrote: Sad to learn of the passing of an iconic Concord Firefighter....... BC Robert Young. To know this amazing man, was a privilege. But to consider him a friend, was truly a blessing. Quite often he would stop by Station 5 to say hi, or drop off something he found in his files, that he thought would be of value to me as an officer. He was an amazingly generous man, inside a gruff old Navy Veterans' body. His vernacular, his unique voice, and his command presence are engrained in the memory of several generations of Concord firefighters. "The Book of Young-ism" is a reference that while never written, is part of every Concord firefighter's memory. He was cut from the image of John Wayne, a hero he so ardently admired, and somewhere last night, John Wayne met him at the gates of heaven to welcome him home. Chief, you will be horribly missed. Thank you for your service to this country, this city, and to your fellow firefighters. You will never be forgotten. Fair winds, and following seas Sir........ Bravo Zulu.
He is survived by his sister Janice Cloutier of Port Orange, FL; niece, Vicki Chapman of Freedom, NH; nephew, Shawn Edwards of Taylor, MS; caregivers, Leona Raymond and Roger Andrus of Penacook.
Robert was predeceased by his parents Donald and Hazel (Smith) Young; sister, Nancy Gregg of Eupora, MS; and nephew, Jimmy Edwards.
