Robert Wayne Wright was born May 7, 1940 in Britton, SD to Henry and Inez (Thorpe) Wright. They brought their second son home to the family farm near Hecla where he would live until December 2, 2021, when due to poor health he had to enter a long term care facility. No matter where he laid his head; his heart was always here on the farm.
He attended a country school through the 8th grade and then graduated from Hecla High School. He attended Wahpeton State School of Science, where he earned a mechanics degree. He served in the National Guard and farmed with his father until Hank passed in 1966. He then continued to farm and raise cattle.
He met Mary Connell in October of 1971. They were married on October 6, 1973.
Bob was a "fixer". He could make any rusty piece of metal and some gas and oil run a 100,000 miles or more.
He loved his Model T's, old John Deeres and a Model L Case. He gathered parts from across the country and put them together to make a 1926 Model T Tudor. He drove it to the Black Hills in 1988 to attend a special family occasion and also to a Model T International Tour in Clear Lake, Iowa. They were grand adventures!
Along with the old cars and tractors he loved antique guns. He treasured the friendship of V.M. Starr, a gunsmith who lived in a cabin on Buffalo Lake, SD. Many fun summer days were spent with "cronies" shooting targets here on the farm. Truth be known the "kitchen table" made a great "rest". Open the windows and see who could "plunk" the 600 yard target down east with some old rifle with aperture sites! Yes, it really did happen!
He was very honored to have been given an honorary life-time membership to the James Valley Tractor Club of Andover, SD. He also loved participating in the James Valley Threshing Show in Andover.
Bob left this earth on September 29, 2023. He and his father-in-law, Jay Connell and uncle, Gene Connell are putting together some old cars right now and planning some precarious excursion! The thunder and lightning you hear are smoke and backfire noise!
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Inez, brother William Wright and his nephew, Jim Wright.
He is survived by his wife Mary, sister-in-law Linda (Larry) Ham, and nieces, Aleesha Ham & Joan Brockel.
There will be no services. Bob's ashes will be brought "home" to the farm, per his wishes.
