Robert "Captain Whitt" Whittenburg, 84, of Michigan City, passed away peacefully at 10:50 a.m., Friday, December 24, 2021 in his home.
He was born January 31, 1937, in Sikeston, Missouri, to Ralph and Bertha (Mattingly) Whittenburg.
Robert worked as a captain at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City for forty years. He was a member of the Springville Community Church in La Porte. Robert was a family-oriented man and a proud husband and father. He built the house they lived in as well as his wife's in-home beauty salon. Robert received the Wabash Award from the Governor of Indiana. He was very dedicated to foster parenting and had fostered 42 children over the course of 20 years. He had adopted some of the children as his own.
On July 1, 1967, in South Bend, Indiana, he married his wife, Judith "Judy" (Sharrer) Whittenburg, who preceded him in death on October 9, 2017.
Also preceding in death were his parents; and his best friend of forty plus years, Rick O'Donnell.
Surviving are his nine children, Tisha Stott of Carmel, Indiana, Dana Curtis of Michigan City, Brett Whittenburg of Michigan City, Ryan (Katie O'Leary) Whittenburg of Michigan City, Cherokee Whittenburg of Michigan City, Savannah Whittenburg of Michigan City, Madison Whittenburg of South Bend, Seth (Brie) Wilhelm of La Porte, and Ruby Martin of Michigan City; one sister, Janice (Michael) Shock of Branson, Missouri; fifteen grandchildren, Lilly, Hazel, Jordan, Hailey, Serenity, Avery, Gabriel, Bryceton, Rocco, Zayn, Keini, Willow, Theo, Colton, and Hudson; one great grandchild, Ezekiel; and his best friend of forty years, Vince Morton of Michigan City.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m., C.S.T., Sunday, January 2, 2022 at Springville Community Church, 5244 N. State Rd. 39, La Porte with Pastor Kurt Feneley officiating. Lakeview Funeral Home & Crematory, La Porte, (219)362-3100 is caring for the arrangements.
