Robert Candler (Bob) Vaughn, Jr., 90, died Sunday, June 26, 2022, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, at his home at Arbor Acres Retirement Community. He was born September 6, 1931 in Winston-Salem to Robert Candler Vaughn, Sr. and Ellen Douglas Arthur Vaughn.
He attended Reynolds High School, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and UNC Law School, followed by three years as a Supply Corps Officer in the U.S. Navy. While he was a Lieutenant stationed in Washington, D. C. he met the love of his life, Carolyn Hartford.
In January 1959 he joined the firm later best known as Petree Stockton, which eventually became Kilpatrick Stockton. He practiced business, estate, and tax law there for more than 40 years until 2001, when Vaughn, Perkinson, Ehlinger, Moxley & Stogner was formed as a law firm specializing in Trusts, Estates, and Tax Law.
Bob and Carolyn were married on May 2, 1959. For 61 years, until her death in 2020, they had a wonderful marriage and true partnership. They were united in their dedication to each other, their children and extended family, their churches, and making a difference in the community.
He was a firm believer in the importance of "giving back" through community service. Over the years he served on numerous boards and committees for charities, his church, and the University and Law School at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Bob truly loved the practice of law, advising clients, and mentoring young lawyers. He was active in various local, state, and national professional groups, and particularly enjoyed serving as the N.C. Chair of the American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel, and President of the N.C. Bar Association.
He was a dedicated and active life-long member of Centenary United Methodist Church.
Bob enjoyed planting flowers in his garden each spring, spending time at Litchfield Beach, reading novels, and playing tennis. He was a wonderful story-teller, and treasured simply spending time with family and friends. Although he stayed busy with work and volunteer commitments, time with family was always his priority.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Carolyn, and his brother, Stuart F. Vaughn, Sr.
Surviving him are his son Robert C. Vaughn, III (Rob), daughter-in-law Karen, and grandsons, who brought him great joy, Will and David Vaughn, (all of Charlotte, NC) and daughter Tricia Vaughn, of Winston-Salem. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Frances Vaughn, and his nieces and nephews.
