Summerville - Robert Darley, who will always be remembered as "Skip", joined his family and friends into eternal rest on January 1, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. To honor Skip, a service will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church of Summerville, SC on January 31 at 1:00pm, followed by a Celebration of Life service held immediately following at Miler Country Club.
Skip was born on July 23, 1949, son of Master Chief (MCPO/HMC) Bob and Jewell Arnold Darley, brother to Arnold Darley (deceased) and sister, JoAnn Whelan, of New Bern, NC.
Skip is survived by his beautiful and loving wife of 47 years, Gail Fleming Darley; his son, Russell Fleming Darley (Renee) and their two children, Julia Kathryn and Davis William of Charlotte, NC.; his daughter, Kathryn Eugenia Darley Simpson (Benjamin) and their two children, James Robert and William Arnold of James Island, SC.
Skip graduated from North Charleston HS ('67), Trident Technical College, and Southern Illinois University. He spent 30+ years at the Charleston Naval Shipyard's Quality Assurance Laboratory Division before transferring and retiring from the Navy's Laboratory Quality Assurance and Accreditation Program with a total of 42 years in civil service.
After retirement, Skip spent several years as a volunteer for Charleston Waterkeepers. He loved anything to do with water - fishing, boating and cruising, which brought him into his part-time job with the Carnival Sunshine. There he found and bonded with a new group of friends who provided him tremendous support during his illness.
Skip wanted to extend a special thanks to the MUSC BMT Doctors (Dr. Green) and PA (Ellen Baldino PAC); and the BMT Nurses (Cary, Shanna, Nancy, and Mike (the best IV man in Charleston) and others for their special and gentle, personal care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the MUSC Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
