Robert Wayne Shafer of Los Fresnos, TX passed away on July 26, 2021. He was born on February 6, 1943 in Mercedes, TX to the late Corrie and Howard Shafer. Wayne was a graduate of San Benito High School, and upon graduation completed two years of service in the United States Army. He married Arlene Adair, the love of his life, April 13, 1968 and loved her well through fifty-three years of marriage, family, friendship, and adventures untold. Wayne worked in the crop insurance business for over forty years, but his favorite title, "PowPow" was affectionately given to him, not by any company, but by his grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Wayne was a Christian man adored for the way he truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an outdoorsman and lover of all animals, the uglier the better! He never met a stranger and was compassionate, playful, fiercely loyal, and he stood up for what he believed.
Wayne will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Arlene and his children Michael (Michelle), Dawn (Sean) Osborn, and Justin (Natalia); his grandchildren: Hunter, Natalie, and Haylee Shafer, Emily and Erin Osborn, Alex and Rebecca Betancourt; one great grandson, Alex N. Betancourt; his brother, Donald Shafer; sisters-in-law, Darlene Adair, Patricia Bull, and Renna Shafer; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Great comfort is found in this verse that so aptly describes Wayne, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that Day?and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing." 2 Timothy 4:7-8
A celebration of Wayne's life will take place at 10:00 a.m. on July 30th at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home located at 1400 W. Business U.S.77 in San Benito. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park. Mark Milum will officiate.
