Dr. Robert Neal Sanders, Sr.
Indianapolis, IN - Robert N. Sanders, Sr, 90, passed away peacefully January 5, 2022 with his wife of 68 years by his side at their home. He was a resident of Indianapolis since 1997 and was a member and former pastor at Cumberland Baptist Church in Cumberland, IN. He is survived by his wife Norma Sue (Thornton;) children Neal (Jean) Sanders; Alan (Deborah DaSilva) Sanders and Laurie (Casey) Squire; grandchildren Abbie Wells, Shelby Sanders, Justin Squire and Carlie Squire. He is preceded in death by daughter Linda (Howard Wells) Sanders.
He was born in Paris, TN on May 5, 1931 to Nelle (Bevill) and Joseph Bennett Sanders as the third of four sons along with brothers Joseph, Gerald and Thomas. Bob and Sue's families lived in Memphis, TN where they met and lived until they married. He was a retired pastor, preacher and writer for over 60 years. During their lives together, he served at 14 different churches in Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana as well as Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He was a graduate of Union University in Jackson TN, as well as the Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and Vanderbilt University Divinity School in Nashville, TN.
He was the editor, compiler and contributor to his book entitled Light for Life's Dark Riddle and the author of his book Radical Voices in the Wilderness: The Social Implications of the Prophets. He was an editor of the Hoosiers Concerned About Gun Violence newsletter and volunteered for the Community Outreach Ministry Eastside (COME) food pantry and participated in the CROP Hunger Walk over the years.
Private family service and burial will be held with a memorial service to be scheduled at a later date.
