Robert Amos "Bob" Roper, 87, of Stafford, VA, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 25, 2021.
Robert was born on November 14, 1933, in Forsyth County, GA. Robert graduated from Canton High School in 1951 and was then employed by Southern Railway in Atlanta.
He enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1953 and was stationed in Miami, FL, where he was a court martial stenographer. A Sergeant, he received an Honorable Discharge in 1955 and returned to work at Southern Railway. Robert finished his career in business when he retired from Bulk Carrier Conference as a rate and tariff publisher in the tank trucking industry.
Robert married the love of his life, Charlotte Annette Byers, on Christmas Eve, 1955. Robert and Annette lived in Alexandria and Stafford, VA. They raised four children and were married for 49 years.
Robert loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, vegetable gardening, classic western films, and golf. He also enjoyed music, especially classical and opera.
Over the years, Robert faithfully attended church at Groveton Baptist Church, Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, and Ramoth Baptist Church. He served on many church committees and his excellent tenor voice could be heard in the choir each Sunday.
Robert is survived by three children, Bobette Roper Magnusen (Steve), Michelle Roper, and Jeremiah Roper. He is also survived by his brother, Junior Roper (Marilee); four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Annette; daughter Marie Roper; parents, Rev. Robert Fulton and Ruby Roper; brother Egbert Roper; and sisters Auberine Scott and Wynette Roper.
Family and friends are invited to two visitation gatherings and a funeral service. The first visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, September 30, at Covenant Funeral Service, 1310 Courthouse Rd., Stafford, VA 22554. The second visitation is Friday, October 1, at 10:30 a.m., with funeral service to follow at 11:30 a.m. at Ramoth Baptist Church, 478 Ramoth Church Rd, Stafford, VA 22554. Interment will take place in Quantico National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
