Retired Police Captain Robert Hochstuhl passed away at age 73 on April 4th after a long battle with cancer. Bob formally of Bloomfield, New Jersey split his time between Stuart, Florida and Waretown, New Jersey. Bob was raised by his parents Ray & Dorothy in Bloomfield and spent 60 years there. He also enjoyed summers at the family house in Seaside Park where he worked on the beach eventually being Lieutenant of life guards. Bob graduated from Bloomfield High School and then attended Susquehanna University where he earned a degree in Marketing Management. After graduation he worked for Prudential Insurance group annuity department and served in the New Jersey Army National Guard.
In 1978 Bob joined the Bloomfield Police Department and graduated first in his class at the Essex County Police Academy. He also received his degree in Criminal Justice with honors from William Paterson University. During his career he was involved with the EMS unit and crime prevention unit also serving as President of the County Crime Prevention Officers Association and was Midnight Patrol Tour Supervisor. His final assignment as Captain was Service Division Commander in charge of prisoner processing and holding, EMS, Communications and records. Bob enjoyed teaching and was certified by both New Jersey Police and Fire Training Commissions. He taught a wide variety of subjects from CPR to Incident Command. Before retirement Bob also served as Bloomfield's OEM Coordinator. Bob was very active in the church serving and volunteering his time as an Elder at Watchung Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield and Peace Presbyterian Church is Stuart. In addition, he spent time volunteering as President of a CAF basketball league at Montclair YMCA, was a member of Tri Boro First Aid Squad, Seaside Park and a member, Captain and trustee of Bloomfield Volunteer Emergency Squad. During retirement he volunteered in the emergency room of Martin South Hospital. Bob and his wife, Diane loved golf and travel. Their two bucket list trips were Tauck Tours of Italy and a river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. Bob is survived by his wife Diane, his sister Jane and her husband Bob and nieces Kerry and Devon and nephew Rob. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to House of Hope. Arrangements have been entrusted to Martin Funeral Home, Stuart Fl.
