In 1953, Robert married Sherlene Story, a marriage that spanned sixty-six years. He graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering.
Shortly after graduation, he returned to Texas and settled in Big Spring where he began his career as a residential and commercial building contractor. Robert was instrumental in the early success of the Highland South development as its initial residential builder during the early 60's. Projects completed by Robert during his time in Big Spring were KBST, Petroleum Building, Rock Terrace Apartments, Quail Run Apartments, as well as numerous homes throughout the city. Big Spring, as well as the friendships cultivated there, always held a special place in his heart.

Renovations and additions to churches, professional offices, schools, and numerous other buildings were also completed during this partnership. He embraced work with great enthusiasm and enjoyed the challenges of each project from start to finish.
Robert was a member and deacon at Glen Meadows Baptist Church, a member of the San Angelo Home Builders Association where he served as president in 1974, and a long-standing member of the San Angelo West Rotary Club.
