Robert Ellis Quinn II passed away June 20, 2022 at the Lakes at Litchfield. Born in Wilson, North Carolina, Robert was the son of the late Martha Howard Lewis and Robert Carl Quinn.
Robert attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina where he graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1966. A fraternity brother intoduced Robert to Sandra Quinn of Wilmington, N.C. and they were married the same year.
Robert began his engineering career with Allied Chemical in Hopewell, Virginia. In 1971 he moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina working with various polyester fiber/chemical companies including Monsanto and Rohm and Haas. He earned several patents for machine design.
In 1995 he transferred to Fiber Industries in Johnsonville, South Carolina and made his home in Georgetown. He continued at the same location with Wellman, Inc. as Facilities Manager. In 2001 Robert retired from engineering.
For the following 18 years Robert devoted himself to volunteer work.
After earning his Master Gardener Certificate, Robert volunteered with Keep Georgetown Beautiful and served on its board. He volunteered as a gardener with Brookgreen Gardens from 2007 - 2019. While there he served on the Volunteer Advisory Board representing the Horticulture Department. Annually he worked on Nights of a Thousand Candles and volunteered for numerous other special events, in the greenhouse and on archaeological digs.
As a Master Gardener Robert represented Clemson Extension Service at the Plant Problem Clinic Saturdays at the Georgetown Farmer's Market.
In addition to volunteering Robert loved to maintain his own garden, his vintage home and to travel. Chautauqua was a favorite respite in the summer and he never missed a Charleston Spoleto Festival. Robert was always curious and eager to learn.
He is survived by Sandra Hunt Quinn, his wife of 55 years and his brother Thomas E. Quinn (Harriet) of Atlanta, GA. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his older sister Martha Quinn Stone of Greensboro,
A memorial service will be held at 8:20 a.m. on July 22, 2022, in Anne's Garden at Brookgreen Gardens. Free entry is through the South Gate beginning at 8:00 a.m.
