Robert Lee Campbell, 65, long-time resident of Strafford, VT, died unexpectedly on February 9, 2021. The fifth of six children, Rob was born November 2, 1955, in St. Albans, Vermont to Kathleen and Floyd Campbell. After graduating from Wakefield High School in Arlington, VA in 1974, Robert returned to his home-state of Vermont and began his decades-long work in the construction trades. He retired in March 2020 as a superintendent for Trumbull-Nelson Construction after working there for 28 years.
Hard-working, fast-moving, and a little gruff, Robert was fiercely dedicated to his family. He combined physical strength with an intuitive watchfulness that radiated rock-solid reassurance and safety to those around him. While he had no children of his own, "Uncle Rob" is deeply loved by his many nephews and nieces and now by their children, too. Driving the tractor, shooting a .22, throwing hay bales, and even going to the movies were among the many "firsts" done under Uncle Rob's supervision. He was a constant and gentle care-giver to his mother for many years until her death in 2018.
After his father's death in 2000, Rob managed the family farm. Despite working full time and taking care of his mother, he lavished the farm itself with love and attention. He maintained the thriving hay business started by his father and enjoyed affectionate ties with many of his long-term hay customers. The lane, the fields, the barn and the house all benefitted from Rob's constant improvement projects, the most recent ones undertaken with his nephews Hector and Owen in tow. Rob also contributed his time, energy, and money to continue the work of restoring and maintaining the historic apple orchard at the Justin Morrill Homestead in memory of his father.
Rob loved a big breakfast, classic rock n' roll, gatherings for family and friends at the farm, and trips to Maine. Predeceased by his parents, sister Gail, and sister-in-law Jane, Rob is survived by his girlfriend Carol, four siblings, 13 nieces and nephews, and their 9 children. The Campbell family will hold a service to celebrate Robert's life in the spring. Donations in his memory may be made to the Friends of the Morrill Homestead in Strafford, VT.
