Robert Norton Brockway III, 83, died peacefully on March 28, 2022 at his home in Stuart.
He was born June 1, 1938 in Bridgeport, CT to Robert N. (Jr.) and Katharine (Alison) Brockway. He attended Stratford High School and then Springfield College, where he met the love of his life, Linda Stewart. They were married June 24, 1961 in New Canaan, CT. Throughout their sixty years of marriage, he never missed an opportunity to let her know how much he adored her.
After earning his Master of Education degree, he began a 38-year career with the YMCA, where he was associated with branches in New York City (West Side), Rhode Island (Westerly-Pawcatuck), Pennsylvania (Northeast and Abington) and Connecticut (Stamford and Wilton.) He was involved with the Rotary Club of Stamford and served as its president. He was an active member of the congregational churches in North Stamford, CT and Stuart and sang in the choir for years.
Bob loved playing golf and fishing. He could fix just about anything and tackled home improvement projects with gusto. He loved to entertain and could whip up a meal for two or twenty. He was an avid gardener and shared that passion with each of his children. The Brockways lived on Hutchinson Island for sixteen years before moving to the Yacht and Country Club seven years ago - where he shared his banana and avocado crops with friends and neighbors. He and Linda enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. Bob loved staying in touch with childhood buddies, other Y retirees, and many friends made along the way. He was a great storyteller, and a generous man.
He is survived by his wife and three children: Karen (Joe) Izzo of Waxhaw, NC, Kevin Brockway of Seattle, WA, and Sara (Jay) Cohen of Tewksbury, MA. He was immensely proud of his five grandchildren: Dylan, Tyler, and Kaitlyn Izzo, and Travis and Jared Cohen. His brother, John (Betsy) Brockway lives in Poughuag, NY; his sister Kate (Gary) Grenholm predeceased him.
Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to: New England YMCA Alumni, 38 Center Beach Ave, Old Lyme CT 06371 to support their efforts to build homes in the Dominican Republic - an endeavor Bob undertook twice with his grandson, Dylan.
