CHICOPEE-Robert J. Berwaldt, 81, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, May 21, 2022. Robert was born in Niagara Falls, NY, a son of the late Melvin and Ruth (Holmes) Berwaldt. He was raised and educated in New York and graduated from Fredonia High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Westover AFB. He proudly served two tours in Vietnam before returning to Chicopee and serving with the 439th Airlift Wing. Master Sergeant Berwaldt received many commendations and awards for his service and bravery before being medically retired in 1976 due to his progressing MS. He was predeceased by his parents, Melvin and Ruth, his older brother, Charles, and his elder daughter, Karen L. King, whom he so dearly loved and missed. Robert leaves his devoted wife of 14 years, Vicki (Long Shortley) Berwaldt of Chicopee, his treasured and steadfast daughter, Jessica Duga, and her husband, Jeffrey of Enfield, CT, and his four grandsons; Jack Duga and his wife Elisabeth, Jacob Duga, Brian King and Andrew King. He also leaves behind Vicki’s daughters and their families, whom he loved, his cats Chloe and Puppy, and many cherished cousins and nephews. Heartfelt thanks to the dedicated and amazing group of caregivers who, for years, saw to his every need and lovingly provided his final care.
