Dr. Robert Bryan Allison, 89, passed away on January 1, 2022 after a brief illness. He was born in Dallas to Margaret and Lester Allison and grew up with his brother Les and sister Martha, all of whom predeceased him. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
He graduated from North Dallas High School in 1949 where he was later honored as Distinguished Alumni. He then graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with highest honors in Pharmacy (BS) in 1953 and from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School (MD) where he joined honorary medical society Alpha Omega Alpha his junior year.
His medical internships/residencies and Chief Residency were at Boston City Hospital on the II and IV Medical Service (Harvard), and he was a Fellow in the Heart Station Thorndike Memorial Lab.
He served in the US Air Force as an internist/cardiologist at Sheppard Air Force Base Texas.
Bob returned to Dallas in 1964, where he began his 36-year career in private practice internal medicine at Baylor University Medical Center. He was Board Certified in Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He retired in 2000, and afterwards enjoyed trips with his wife, especially to New Zealand and often to England.
He met Gayle Herndon in Dallas, and they were married in 1966. Together they raised their two children, Sara Allison Schultz (Paul) and Bryan Allison, MD (Jill Stephenson, MD). They welcomed six grandchildren: Margaret Schultz Roby (David), James Schultz, Ben Schultz, Steven Schultz, Sam Allison, and Abby Grace Allison, all of whom survive him. He enjoyed the blessings of his family, attending many of his grandchildren's activities - football, basketball, and soccer games and taking them fishing on Turtle Creek. Over the years, the whole family took annual beach trips to South Padre Island, Florida, or California. He also is survived by several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Throughout his life, Bob was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Of special significance were the many fishing trips he took to Alaska. In recent years, he treasured early Saturday morning coffees with lifelong friends.
A memorial service will be held in Cox Chapel at Highland Park United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 15 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, 1420 W. Mockingbird, Suite 700, Dallas, TX 75247, vnatexas.org.
