Richard (Dick) Clayton Stockwell, age 77, of Janesville, WI, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born on June 11, 1947, he was the beloved son of Clayton and Irene (Dixon) Stockwell. Dick's roots in Janesville ran deep, where he graduated from Janesville Senior High School, before pursuing higher education at Lawrence University. At Lawrence, he excelled as a member of the swim team, an achievement honored with their recent induction into the Lawrence University Intercollegiate Athletic Hall of Fame. He furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, embodying a lifelong dedication to learning.
Upon returning to Janesville, Dick joined his father at Rock County Buick-GMC, a family legacy established in 1939. Dick was responsible for adding the Honda franchise to the business, where he later took the helm. In 2020, he was thrilled to have the third generation of the family join the business, when his daughter Kara came on board, ensuring the business thrived well beyond its 85th year. A testament to his commitment and hard work.
Dick was a pillar of the Janesville community. His spirited involvement included both serving and taking on leadership roles in the Janesville Rotary Club, Blackhawk Technical College Board, and WATDA (Wisconsin Automobile & Truck Dealers Association). In addition. he generously supported the Janesville Performing Arts Center. His public service extended to becoming a member of the Janesville City Council, reflecting his passion for civic engagement.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Kimberly Nania Stockwell, with whom he cherished 23 years of love and partnership. His legacy continues through his children: Tonya Stockwell, Kara Nania, Ryan (Sergei) Alexeev, John (Eniko) Nania, as well as his treasured grandchildren, Anastasia and Alexander Alexeev. Dick was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2024, at HENKE-CLARSON FUNERAL HOME, 1010 North Wright Road, Janesville. In honor of Dick's life and his battle with polio in his youth, memorials may be made to Rotary Polio Plus or to the Rotary Botanical Gardens.
