Richard J. Schunior, M.D. F.A.C.S, age 82, passed away peacefully in his home with his family by his side, on June 6, 2022. Dr. Schunior was the son of the late Ella Pena Schunior and Emil Schunior. He was born on September 3, 1939 and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Physics with top honors from Tulane University (1957-1960) in New Orleans, Louisiana. He then attended Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans and received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1964. He returned to Texas and was an intern at University of Texas Medical Branch and at the John Sealy Hospital, both located in Galveston, TX. From 1965-1967, he was at the Department of General Surgery at the University of Texas Branch in Galveston, TX. In 1967, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in Ft. Gordon, Georgia as a U.S. Army Surgeon and in 1968, went to Vietnam where he was a medical company commander and M.A.S.H. Surgeon. He returned from Vietnam and completed his General Surgery Residency and Fellowship at M.D. Anderson Cancer Institute located in Houston, TX. Dr. Schunior was licensed in both Louisiana and Mississippi with the LA State Board of Medical Examiners, MS State Board of Medical Licensure, and the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Schunior started his private practice in Slidell, LA in 1972, where he was the first Board Certified General Surgeon. He was an active member of the LA State Medical Society, Surgical Association of LA, St. Tammany Parish Medical Society, Surgical Association of LA, M.D. Anderson Associate, and the LA Chapter/American College of Surgeons. He has been awarded and honored with dozens of plaques, medals, certificates, etc. throughout his career. Dr. Schunior had a love and talent of classical piano and hosted many concerts at his house along with the late Slidell native and talented musician, Ronnie Kole. He also enjoyed world traveling with his family, deep sea fishing, golf, tennis, and playing poker. He is survived by his wife, Feronie App Schunior; his daughters, Sharon Trice (Shane) and Deborah Coe (Brian); his sons, Michael Schunior (Erica) and John Schunior; his 10 grandchildren, Heather Trice Foertter (Brandon) Amanda Trice, Kip "Parker" Morris, Jr. (Kara), Emily Annestelle Morris, Jack Houston Morris, Kara and Kylie Rodriguez, Katelyn and Joshua Coe, and Noah Schunior; and his three great-grandchildren, Camilla and Myra Morris and Lilah Foertter. He was also survived by friend/personal assistant, Donna Acosta Molitor; care-givers/neighbors, Ray and Jenn Adams; and by his half-siblings, Colleen Schunior Hall, Elizabeth Schunior Jensen, and Emil Schunior Jr.; and several nieces and nephews located in the Houston, TX area. Dr. Schunior ("Doc", "Dude", "Papa Schuns") will be greatly missed and was deeply loved by all who knew him. He was our hero and now our guardian angel, who will continue to watch over and protect us until we are all together again in God's Kingdom. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, June 16, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Audubon Funeral Home in Slidell.
