Richard Jay Roos, age 65, passed away from this life on June 12, 2023, surrounded by loved ones, at the Mid-Columbia Medical Center, in The Dalles, Oregon. He sadly succumbed to complications from his battle with multiple sclerosis, which he had heroically fought for the last 20 years. Richard was known to his friends and family as Rich.
Rich was born in Decatur, Illinois to Tedine Roos and Robert Roos. He was one of two children and loved being an older brother to his little sister, Rozalynd, who he affectionately called "Sis". He was joined in eternal life, only 12 days after passing, by his father, Robert Roos. He is survived by his mother, Tedine Roos of Spokane Washington, his daughter Coriann Obenshain (Travis Obenshain) of Seaside, Oregon, his sister Rozalynd Roos Merrill (George Merrill) of Marshall, California, his nephew Maxfield Roos Chandler (Barbora Chandler) of Prague, Czech Republic, and by extended family.
Growing up in the Midwest, Rich was involved with the Boy Scouts of America, which inspired him to join the Coast Guard after graduating from Milwaukee Technical High School in 1976. While involved with the Boy Scouts, he earned the title, Order of the Arrow, and was awarded the Pro Deo et Patria by the Lutheran Church. His Coast Guard duties brought him to many stations, where he eventually met and married Elvie in Michigan. While married, they brought baby girl, Coriann, into the world.
The Coast Guard brought Rich and his family to Astoria in 1994, where he grew to love the Oregon coast. With this move, he was also promoted to Chief. In 1997, Chief Roos retired from the Coast Guard and settled in Astoria Oregon, where he co-parented and raised his daughter.
Shortly after his military retirement, he started to work with Wadsworth Electric, where he worked on many local schools, doctor offices and buildings. He loved showing his daughter the places and projects he was involved in.
Rich enjoyed many hobbies which included fishing, gardening, reading, scrabble, chess, and cribbage. You could always find him with a cup of coffee, a good book, a cat on his lap or playing with his daughter. Rich held several titles in his life, but his most valued title was Dad. He was a good man, an animal lover and a devout Christian.
At this time, the family is not holding a public memorial. A portion of his cremains were buried side by side with his father at Macon County Memorial Park in Decatur, Illinois. The family asks that if you are so moved, you make a donation to the National MS Society or to the U.S. Lighthouse Society in his memory.
