Richard Elwood Norris (Shorty), 78, of York, passed away peacefully in his home on Jan. 12, 2021. Born Nov. 19, 1942, in Somerset, a son to Elwood and Hilda (Ringler) Norris. Preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Ronald and Stanley. Survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Cheryl (Emerick); daughter Christie Holmes (son-in-law Bill) of York; and son Jason Norris (daughter-in-law Heather Iverson) of Dover, FL; grandchildren: Chelsey, Brandon, Justin, Matthew, Davis and Ryan; and siblings: Gary Norris (wife Karen Deist) of Friedens, Kenneth Norris (wife Charlene Hoppert) of Fairhope, Sandra Stiffey (husband Phillip Stiffey) of New Port Richey, FL, Donna Sands (husband Jeffery Sands) of Johnstown, Brenda Bradshaw of Meyersdale, and sister-in-law Rebecca Norris of Sipesville. Also known as Uncle Shorty, he was loved and admired by numerous nieces and nephews. As a son and brother-in-law he was very close and supportive of his wife's family whom he dearly loved. After graduating from Berlin Brothersvalley High School in 1960 he proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1961-1967, at which time he married his beloved wife (Cheryl Emerick) on Jun. 3, 1967, and raised their two children in Sykesville, MD. Richard had an unprecedented entrepreneurial spirit in his lifetime, after starting his career with Xerox he went on to own several successful businesses including Pilot Air Freight, Consolidated Stationers, and New Century Assoc. through which he impacted the lives of a countless number of employees, customers, associates, and often was selflessly a consultee to other entrepreneurs alike. Richard always found time to devote to his community through the Winfield Little League Baseball program, volunteered time teaching accounting and money management at Liberty High School, and was an active member with the Jaycees. Retired, he enjoyed fly fishing, hunting, bird watching, golf, football, reading, politics and mentoring youth through BSA as an assistant scoutmaster. His happiness was always evident in helping others, seeing others succeed, and the time he so valued with his family. There will be a celebration of his wonderful and impactful life to be announced at a later time.
