Richard Jules Kinlein, 85, of Rocky Ridge, passed away on May 6, 2021 at Kline Hospice House in Mount Airy. He was the loving husband of Rosemary R. Kinlein, who passed on October 4, 2010.
Born in Baltimore, Richard was the son of the late Julius and Eleanor Kinlein. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland, in the last class that could be admitted to the Law program without an undergraduate degree. He also served in the Maryland Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve as a flight line mechanic on C-130 Hercules and HU-16 Albatross aircraft, occasionally assisting the Air Force with his law degree, even as an enlisted airman.
Rosemary Kinlein was born July 3, 1940 in Washington, DC to the late Roy H. and Elizabeth Ross. Rosemary was a registered nurse, having graduated from St. Agnes Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore. She worked at North Arundel Hospital (now UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center) where she was Head Nurse in the Recovery Room. She also worked at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Rosemary left Montgomery General when her son was born, and later worked as a pre-school assistant at St. James Nursery School in Mt. Airy.
Richard's professional career continued in his practice as a trial lawyer and defense attorney. He also served as State's Attorney for Howard County from 1966 - 1975, and continued to work as a trial lawyer and defense attorney, often pro-bono, from his law practice in Ellicott City.
In "retirement" Richard and Rosemary reinvented themselves, moving to the Eastern Shore and starting a charter boat business. Richard was owner/skipper of Somer's Rose and Kristy Ann, while Rosemary handled the business side of the enterprise. Rosemary also volunteered with Hospice of Queen Anne's County and helped in their benefit thrift store, Estate Treasures.
Richard and Rosmary are survived by their children, Suzanne Donovan, Elizabeth Dodson, Joseph Linsenmeyer, Laurie Sims and John Kinlein; sister, Mary Blackert; eleven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. They were preceded in death by their son, Matthew Kinlein, and Richard was preceded in death by his sister, Missy Walton.
Richard and Rosemary will be privately inurned together. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Operation Smile (operationsmile.org) or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (stjude.org).
