Beloved Father and Husband Richard Andrew Herman passed away in Milford, Delaware August 03, 2024. A son of Western Pennsylvania ? and by birthright an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan ? he was born to the late Andrew Herman and Matilda Kunis Herman in Wilkinsburg, PA May 27, 1940.
Mr. Herman's honorable 4 years of service in the United States Air Force /Strategic Air Command as ground crew for the venerable KC-135 Supertanker translated into a lifelong passion for all things related to military aviation.
As he raised his family in Pennsylvania and then Northern Virginia, he spent many years supporting activities of his children's schools, including often serving as a chaperone, assisting with building projects, and helping with the coordination of school events. Mr. Herman was also a friend to various local libraries throughout his life, staffing donation activities and assisting with the selling of surplus books as library fund-raisers.
A proud American, Mr. Herman volunteered at the Air Mobility Command Museum at the Dover Air Force Base in his later years with his wife Frieda, working with fellow Air Force veterans in support of a common cause.
Those who knew Mr. Herman will recall his kindness - to all animals ? especially dogs, and underprivileged/ill children. He was unwilling to pass a dog without introducing himself or saying hello and could always be spotted in his retirement community waiting for one of his furry friends to stop for a brief visit. His laughter, inquisitive personality, dedication to family, and unwavering patriotism will be fondly remembered by his family and loved ones.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Frieda Riedel Herman of Magnolia; children, Daniel Herman of Groveland, FL and Janet Herman and her husband Kevin Culp of Mt. Airy, MD and grandson, Gavin Patrick Culp.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests contributions be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or The Wounded Worrier Project.
Memorial services will be held 3PM, Friday, August 9, 2024 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may call one hour prior.
