Richard "Dick" Freng, age 84, of Huron, passed away on Friday, July 31, 2020 at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, surrounded by family. His private memorial service will be on Monday, August 10, 2020 at Welter Funeral Home. Dick's family will greet friends from 2-3 PM on Monday at the funeral home. CDC guidelines will be in place and masks are required. There will be a memorial visitation on Sunday, August 9, from 1-3 PM with no family present. Richard Freng was born on June 17, 1936 to parents Clifford and Ruth (Sathe) Freng in Yankton. They later divorced and Dick lived with his mom until he joined the Army in November of 1954. He spent most of his service time in Germany.
When Dick returned to Yankton, he started to work with Northwest Public Service. He generated electricity for 45 years with NWPS, retiring in 2004. It was in June of 1968 that the family transferred from Yankton to Huron.
He married Beverly Meyer from Hartington, NE in Vermillion on May 28, 1960.
With Dick's service record he became eligible to be a life member of the VFW. He earned many honors for his many hours dedicated to the organization. Most will remember him from BINGO night. He was also an American Legion member. He was the mastermind on promoting the Veteran's Day during the South Dakota State Fair. Dick was most proud of the VFW golf cart program at the South Dakota State Fair that he and members of the VFW and Bev and the Ladies' Aux. got rolling. He had not missed a year of driving a golf cart.
He was preceded in death by his parents and many aunts and uncles.
Dick is survived by his wife Beverly of Huron; six children; Karen (Greg) Olson of Rapid City and their children, Amanda (Jason) Daniels (Eliza and Owen), Justin (fiance Britta Barta) Olson all of Sioux Falls, Carmen (Brent) Mason and their children, Tyler, Tory and Teagan, all of Frankfort, Kyle Freng of Huron, Cristen (Pat Ellwein) Kuno of Rapid City and her children, Nicholas and Nicole Kuno of Madison, WI, Karla (Corey) Wiegel of Huron and their children Morgan of Sioux Falls and Nolan of Huron, and Courtney (Nate Olson) Freng and their children, Anetta and Graham, all of Minneapolis.
