Richard M. (Dick) Campbell
May 27, 1945 - May 3, 2024
Richard M. (Dick) Campbell age 78 passed away on Friday May 3rd, 2024. Dick was born and grew up in New Tazewell, Tennessee. He attended Claiborne County schools until the age of 14 when he moved to Knoxville to live with his first cousins, the Hill family where he gained a brother Gary and a sister Cathy whom he remained close with his entire life. He graduated from Central High School in Knoxville in 1963 and afterwards attended Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee before volunteering for the US Army. While on active duty he served as a Drill Sergeant & Platoon Leader in the Combat Infantry Division. Upon completion of his active duty, he enrolled at East Tennessee State University where he earned his BS degree with a double major in Biology and Chemistry in 1970. After college Dick worked in sales for Norris Homes Recreational Vehicle Manufacturing in New Tazwell for 12 years. In 1983 he joined his lifelong friend Hollis Bush, owner of Bushline Furniture, where he remained for 32 years working in sales and as a sales manager before retiring in 2015. He also worked as a manufacture's representative for Spring Air Mattress Company for many years. After retiring he moved to Winston-Salem, NC to be closer to his family and grandchildren. In retirement he found some of his greatest joy getting his grandson off the school bus each afternoon. He was a fixture at the local little league watching his grandson play for many years. When his granddaughter arrived his talents as a loving and caring grandfather were on full display. An avid Tennessee fan you would find him surrounded by family every Saturday afternoon in the fall watching Tennessee football on TV. He was season ticket holder for Tennessee football for over 35 years and you could always spot him wearing a UT hat or golf shirt after moving to NC. Dick was saved at the age of 10 and baptized at First Baptist Church of New Tazewell. He was a member of Fountian City Presbyterian in Knoxville. He was preceded in death by his parents J.M. and Pearl Campbell, brother and sister-in-law Jimmy and Lucy Campbell. He is survived by his son Jason and wife Jessica Campbell as well as his two grandchildren James & Julia of Winston-Salem, NC. He is also survived by Cathy and Bill Youmans and Gary and Wanda Hill all of Knoxville, TN. His memory is held dear by his former wife, friend, and mother of his son, Beth Boyd also of Winston-Salem. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Claiborne Overholt Funeral Home of New Tazewell, TN. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Saturday May 11th from 11:00-1:00 with a graveside service immediately following at 1:00 at Fairview Cemetery.
