Richard Lee Ball, age 80, of Ringgold, Georgia, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024. Richard was a devoted husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who adored his family, animals, a good glass of Scotch, and music.
Richard was born on July 31, 1943 to Florence and Turner Ball in Sylva, North Carolina. Raised on a dairy farm, he worked as an EMT while attending Tri-County Community College, where he studied Business Administration and Management. Following graduation, Richard worked in the journalism field until becoming the editor of the News-Herald in Blue Ridge, Georgia and then the Catoosa County News in Ringgold, Georgia.
Richard retired from the editorial profession in 2000 to pursue writing, and published Hanging onto the Cow's Foot, a collection of editorials from his journalism career, in 2001. While retired, he worked part-time as a substitute teacher at both Dalton High School and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School. As a Celtic and Bluegrass music lover, Richard spent the later part of his retirement as the CEO of WAAK's Boynton Educational Radio and hosted weekly radio shows where he shared Celtic and Bluegrass music with his listeners.
Richard married Christina "Tina" Ball in 1980 and they enjoyed 43 years of marriage together with their family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved to spend his time with his family, camping, reading, and attending Scottish festivals, especially the Stone Mountain Highland Games every October.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, Turner and Florence Evans Ball, and sister, Jeanette Ball. He is survived by his wife, Tina; his children, Antonio Ball, Adrian Ball, Eric Scott (Melissa) Richards, and Christina (Jaret) Siefert; his grandchildren, Joshua (Meghan) Liner, Patrick (Brittney) Liner, Elizabeth Willis, Andrew Richards, Emily (Paul) Wong, and Alexander Richards; his great-grandchildren, Caleb Willis, Claire Liner, Logan Willis, Ethan Wong, and Ellie Wong; his siblings Irene Williamson, Kathleen Massner, Frances (Robert) Mull, Clyde Ball, and Clinton (Karen) Ball, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
His family will receive visitors at Heritage Funeral Home in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on Monday, January 29, 2024 from 11:00AM to 1:00PM with a memorial service to immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions to honor his love of animals to be made to the Catoosa County Humane Society.
