Dr. Richard Louis Alpert, October 10, 1935 - November 29, 2023, Greenville, SC.
Dr. Richard Alpert, 88, died on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Maxie Louis Alpert and Eleanor Calvert Alpert. His parents were clothing merchants who owned and operated Alpert's of Sumter, a fine lady's apparel store started by his grandmother, Mary Belin Alpert. Dr. Alpert graduated from Edmunds High School and married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Ann Hill. Soon after graduation, he attended the University of South Carolina and graduated from the University of Tennessee with the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Before deciding to become a dentist, he took a year off to pursue his artistic talents in New York. However, it wasn't long before he made the wise decision to return home and become a dentist.
Dr. Alpert loved his work, he loved his family and he loved spending time with his grandchildren. He settled in Greenville where he established his dental practice and raised his beautiful family that he was so proud of. He was the consummate gentleman, an Eagle Scout, a political cartoonist, a water colorist, a hole in one golfer, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and renowned dentist. He dedicated his life to dentistry and gave tirelessly to the Temple Israel and his community by volunteering and chairing numerous committees. He was a member of the Greenville Poinsett Club and member of the Greenville Country Club for over 50 years.
A pioneer in the field of TMJ, Temporal Mandibular Joint disorder, Dr. Alpert studied under the country's leading dental authorities and became one himself in the area of Aesthetic and Functional Dentistry. He educated dentists throughout the country including at the L. D. Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, Florida.
Past president of numerous local and national dental organizations, Dr. Alpert also served as a fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists. Dr. Alpert received the prestigious Pierre Fauchard Academy Award for the most outstanding dentist in South Carolina and was named a Pankey Hero in 2019.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 36 years, Linda Ware Alpert, his son, Richard Louis Alpert Jr., his daughters, Margaret Elaine Alpert (Tom Colquitt), Jessica Sparks Morton (James Morton), Meredith Sparks Myers (Dr. Michael Myers) his brother Dr. Calvert Clay Alpert (Frances Alpert), his sister Cindy Alpert Saad (Al Saad), his grandsons Alex Alpert, Michael Alpert, Kaz Colquitt, James Morton IV, Will Morton, William Myers, Robert Myers, Henry Myers, his granddaughters, Margaret Myers, Catherine Morton and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Margaret Ann Hill, his son Alan Clay Alpert, daughter-in-law Melanie Baron Alpert, grandson, Rand Alexander Colquitt, and sister, Maxine Calvert Alpert (Sol Kline)
The family will receive friends from 3-5pm, Sunday, December 3rd, 2023 at the Social Hall, Temple Israel, 400 Spring Forest Rd., Greenville, SC. A graveside burial will be held at 2 pm, Monday, December 4, 2023 at the Jewish Cemetery, 700 West Oakland Avenue, Sumter SC. Rabbi Rose will officiate. Dr. Alpert's 8 grandsons will serve as pallbearers with the burial handled by Bullock Funeral Home.
