The Funeral Service of the late Rev. James A. Hazel, 83 of Albany, Georgia, who did on Friday, October 2, 2020, will be conducted on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Hines Memorial CME Church Family Life Center with interment in Floral Memory Gardens. The service is closed to the public but will be lived-streamed via ZOOM. A password is required to view the services.
Rev Hazel was born in Dougherty County, Georgia, the fourth child of the late Mr. D.C. Hazel, Sr., and the Late Mrs. Lucy Johnson Hazel. He was educated in the public schools of Dougherty County, graduating from Monroe High School. He completed his undergraduate studies at Albany State College(now Albany State University). Rev. Hazel received a certificate in Old Testament studies from Phillips School of Theology, and a Master of Education from Georgia State University.
Rev. Hazel was married to the late Miss. Delores Simmons for 28 years.
Rev. Hazel was licensed to preach the gospel on April 7, 1956. He pastored several congregations in the South Georgia Annual Conference in the Sixth Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church before being promoted to Presiding Elder. Upon his retirement from the ministry, he worshipped with Hines Memorial CME Church.
He began teaching in the public school of Brooks County and transferred to the Dougherty County School and retired after 30 years as an educator.
Rev. Hazel was a member of several organizations, including: the NAACP, Georgia Association of Educators, National Education Association, National Elementary School Principals Association, Georgia Retired Educators Association, Albany State National Alumni Association and Georgia State Alumni Association.
Survivors include sisters, Mrs. Ola Bullock, Mrs. Nellie Thorne, and Mrs. Lucy Dunn, all of Albany; brothers, D.C. Hazel, Jr., and Willie Roger Hazel, both of Albany: 13 nieces, nephews and 21 great-nieces and great nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife and his youngest sister, Mrs. Claudia Hazel Tabor.
