Rev. James M. Edge, 96, of Carthage, TX, passed away on Saturday morning, April 9, 2022, in Mission, TX. James Matthew Edge was born on May 3, 1925, in the Old Center Community of Panola County, TX to the late Jesse Albritton and Frances Surginer Edge. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was honorably discharged. He later became an active member of both the American Legion and V.F.W. Posts in Carthage. James earned a Master's Degree in Religious Education and served as a Baptist minister for 70-plus years and pastored at the following churches: New Hope Baptist in Jacksonville, First Baptist in New Caney, Central Baptist in Haskell, First Baptist in Talpa, Lakeland Baptist in Richland Springs, Calvary Baptist and Western Hills Baptist in San Angelo, Davis Street Baptist in Sulphur Springs, Richland Baptist in Quitman, Lake Highlands Baptist in Sulphur Springs, Rockdale Baptist in Sulphur Springs, Calvary Baptist in Cooper, and Elm Ridge Baptist in Como. Rev. Edge moved to Carthage in 2009, from Sulphur Springs and took his last pastorate at Liberty Baptist Church in the Brooks Community of Panola County. He was a master mason and was former member of the Sulphur Springs Lodge #221 and was presently a member of the Carthage Lodge #521. He was preceded in death by siblings, Georgia Taylor, Kenny Garland, Mary Bramlet Garland, J.D. Edge, Eldon Edge, Arnie Edge, Jessie Edge, Rev. LeRoy Edge, Sally Nelson, Bonnie Luker Bell, Daniel Edge, Charles Edge, and Pat Edge; son, James Mark Edge; and wives, Pauline Elizabeth Eason Edge and Dorothy Gay King Wilcox Edge.
He is survived by son, Dr. Raymond Edge and wife Sue; daughters, Esther Salisbury and Kathy Wilcox Cashion and husband Grady; caretaker, Ana Proffitt; grandchildren, Meredith Coke, Joshua Salisbury, Jonathan Edge, Clara Edge, Jami Holloway, and Tanya Edge Outland; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2022, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Raymond Edge officiating. Interment will follow in Old Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
