Rev. Dr. John Milford Mackey, Sr., 89, of Fayetteville, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at his home with his family by his side. John was born on January 14, 1934, to the late John Herbert Mackey and Mary Caroselli Mackey in Cleveland, OH, in the midst of the Great Depression. John grew up on a farm in Canonsburg, PA. Church played a major role in John's life as a teen and guided most of his career and life choices. Working his way through school, he graduated from Washington and Jefferson College in 1956, and enrolled in Westminster Seminary while serving as a Student Pastor with the Darlington Methodist Charge. Soon he met the love of his life, Elizabeth, and they married in June of 1960, and began a family. John pastored several churches through the years while continuing his studies, eventually being invited to become the Director of Clinical Services at the Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute in 1981. He retired in Fayetteville, NC in 1997 as the Director of the Fayetteville Family Life Center. In retirement, he continued to counsel and consult with other Hospital Counseling Centers across North Carolina.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth; sons, Dean Mackey (Lisa), and Mark Mackey (Sheila); grandchildren, Justin Mackey and Kirsten Mackey; sister, Mary Lou Parks; and daughter-in-law, Linda Mackey. He is predeceased by his son, John Mackey, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Michelle Mackey. A viewing will also take place on Saturday, January 28, 2023, from 10-11 AM, at Darlington United Methodist Church, 2118 Shuresville Road, Darlington, MD. Services will begin at 11 AM.
