Rev. Dr. Fred Duncan McGehee, Jr., 85, of Raleigh, NC, completed his life's journey Saturday, June 26, 2021 after a brief illness. Fred was born October 18, 1935 in Pharr, Texas to Fred Duncan McGehee, Sr. and Sybil Tune McGehee. His sister, Mary Ainsworth, of Shreveport, Louisiana, preceded him in death. Fred is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Wynn McGehee, two daughters, and their families. Kathy (McGehee) and Mark Harris with their son, Derek, reside in Eastland, Texas. Cheryl (McGehee) and Rob Littleton with their daughter, Erin, reside in Bristol, Tennessee.
Fred graduated from Baylor University (B.A.), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (B.D., M.R.E., Th. M.), and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (D. Min.). He completed one year of Clinical Pastoral Education at the Texas Medical Center, Houston, Texas.
Fred began his ministry as a hospital chaplain in Houston, Tx. He pastored Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and Double Shoals Baptist Church, both of Shelby, NC. He pastored Oak Ridge Baptist Church, Kittrell, NC during his retirement years.
Fred served in denominational life on the local, state, and national levels. For eighteen years, he created and grew a national program of career assessment to aid and encourage ministers at Lifeway Christian Resources, Nashville, Tennessee. Eventually, this effort touched the lives of ministers of more than fifty denominations around the world. He later served as Director of the Office of Minister Support with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina.
Another aspect of Fred's ministry included teaching. He served as an adjunct professor at Campbell University Divinity School, Buies Creek, NC and Golden Gate Theological Seminary, Mill Valley, CA. He also was a guest lecturer at numerous colleges and seminaries. He taught classes at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Baptist Medical Center, Jackson, MS and at Baptist Hospital, Selma, AL. He also taught ministers in South Africa on three occasions.
Fred was the author of one book, several chapters in religious books, and numerous articles in periodicals such as Christianity Today.
Leisure activities included traveling, gardening, fishing, reading, writing, and spoiling grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Friday, July 2, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Double Shoals Baptist Church, Shelby, NC. A service of worship will be held Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, Raleigh, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Trinity Baptist Church, 4815 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC or The Springmoor Endowment Fund, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, NC 27615.
