Ray was born in Brooklyn, New York and became a winter resident of Vero Beach 36 years ago. He eventually built a home in Castaway Cove and made Vero Beach his full-time residence 24 years ago, moving here from Darien, Connecticut.
Ray served in the US Navy aboard the cruiser USS Oklahoma City during WW II, including operations at the battle of Okinawa. Following his time in the service he graduated from Pace University in New York City and entered the accounting field with Price Waterhouse in 1953 in Los Angeles, California. Ray became a Certified Public Accountant and a specialist in service to the entertainment industry, including handling the envelopes at major Hollywood awards ceremonies. Ray was admitted to the partnership at Price Waterhouse in 1965, and when the firm acquired a local accounting practice in Arizona in 1970, Ray moved his family to the Phoenix area to help stabilize and lead the new office. In 1974 he transferred to the firm's NYC office where he continued to work in the entertainment sector and helped lead an emerging area of the practice - litigation support. In that role, Ray was the principal expert witness for a major technology company when an antitrust suit was filed by the Federal Government. After this successful career, Ray retired from Price Waterhouse in 1987.
Ray was an avid runner for most of his life and could often be seen enjoying the trails and sidewalks of Vero's Riverside Park. He took up yoga in his 80s and was still riding a stationary bike daily this year. Ray had close, loving relationships with each of his children, and was a super grandfather to his twelve grandchildren, tirelessly entertaining them with outdoor activities, imaginative play acting, or any other game of their choice.
