Ray Fetter Huber, age 93, died at the Veterans' Victory Nursing Home, in Walterboro, South Carolina on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022.
A Visitation is from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2022 at Carolina Memorial Park Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406. A chapel service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel. There is no graveside service planned.
He is preceded by his parents, Harry S. Huber and Elizabeth F. Huber, of Lititz, Pennsylvania where he was born and a sister, Ruth F. Earhart of Elizabethtown, PA and a grandson, Jared T. Huber, of Lafayette, LA.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn M. (Gochenauer) Huber of Summerville, SC (married for nearly 69 years), three sons and daughter's-in-law, Dr. Timothy R. and Mrs. Jean G. Huber, Mr. Michael E. and Mrs. Deborah S. Huber all of Summerville, SC, and Kurt M. and Dr. M. Paige Huber of Pendleton, SC, nine grandchildren (Sara Forehand, Anna Huber, M.D., Aaron Huber, Chad Huber, Matthew Huber, Evan Huber, William Huber and Ben Huber with five great grandchildren as well as a sister, Margaret R. Hubbard of San Antonio, Texas and a brother, Donald R. Huber of Manheim, PA.
He was involved in the construction business around Lancaster, PA until 1957 when he and Kathryn moved to Edisto Island, SC with Tim and Mike to renovate Brookland Plantation for a Home for Boys property as part of a faith outreach ministry. After this, he and Kathryn decided to remain in SC and he worked for Richard King and Sons Construction, responsible for developing and building the original Naval Weapons Station, Goose Creek's POMPLANT infrastructure and munitions storage systems in the 1958-60 time-frame. He then went to work for George H. Hamrick and Sons at 35 Broad Street in old Charleston, SC as a licensed building contractor where he also obtained his SC realtor broker's license. He was later hired by Westvaco Development Corporation in Summerville, SC where he served to initiate property development and homebuilding for lots and homes on Seabrook Island, SC and their the Ashborough subdivision in Summerville, SC. He later served as broker in charge for the Ashborough East, Briarwood, and Iron Gate subdivisions in Summerville and the Crowfield Plantation in Berkeley County. He was the founding President of the Charleston Homebuilder's Association and a past President of the Dorchester County Republican Party, the King's Grant on the Ashley Home Owners Association as well as Chairman of the Dorchester County Aeronautics Board. He was instrumental in developing and opening the current Dorchester County Airport near Jedburg, SC and served on the Dorchester County Economic Development Board.
He was active in his local churches over the years and a member of Charleston Harbor Bible Church, Chas, SC; Harvest Baptist Church, N. Chas; Oakbrook Presbyterian Church, Summerville, SC; and 2nd Presbyterian Church, Greenville, SC. He was active in the local and national organization of the Christian Business Men's Committee, International and worked as a volunteer with JAARS (Jungle Aviation and Radio Service) a branch of Wycliffe Bible Translators. He was an avid aviator and owned several single-engine aircraft that he restored, upgraded, and piloted over the years until his health began to fail. He retired from Westvaco in the early 1980's and pursued private business and volunteer activities until 2005 when he and Kathryn moved to a slower life in Anderson, SC. Although he never spoke much about his time served in the United States Coast Guard at the end of World War II, but he was known to remark that what he saw as a teenager led him to pray and hope that God would never allow the devastation and suffering that he witnessed while in Northern Germany and Southern Europe to ever come to the United States of America.
