Rachel Quarles McCalla died on December 30, 2021 at age 96. Rachel was born in Abbeville, SC, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Y. Quarles. She was a 1942 graduate of Abbeville High School where she was a cheerleader, as well as playing on the tennis and basketball teams. She was a 1946 graduate of Winthrop College and received a post-graduate degree in dietary science from Johns Hopkins. While working for Greenville General Hospital Rachel met and eventually married a young doctor named Larry McCalla in 1949. They were married until his death in 2017.
Rachel was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 66 years. For many years she volunteered, as well as served on the boards of Meals on Wheels, United Ministries and the Alston Wilkes Society. She was also an avid golfer at the Greenville Country Club and swam laps at the YMCA until age 93.
Surviving are two sons: Steve McCalla (Gretchen) of Columbia and Allen McCalla (Suzanne) of Greenville, one daughter: Cathy McCalla Griffin (Hunter), and five grandchildren: Vivian Small Edwards, Sam McCalla, Rachel Griffin Palmer (Alex), Hunter Griffin Jr, and Reid Griffin. She is also survived by a brother William Quarles, Jr. of Greenville. She was predeceased by a son, Bill McCalla, a sister Jean Corbin, and four brothers Charles, Robert, John, and Jimmy Quarles.
Funeral services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm on Sunday January 23rd. Following the service the family will be at the home.
