Mrs. Rachel Banister Bargainnier, age 92, of Rome, GA, passed away on Thursday, April 29, 2021, at a local senior assisted living facility.
Rachel was born in Canton, Ohio on June 26, 1928 to Gypsy Stephens Banister and Monroe Conyers Banister. She moved to Georgia with her parents at the age of two. She attended Rome High for Girls and played basketball for the school. She married her high school sweetheart, Charles Hugh Bargainnier, at the age of sixteen and they celebrated their 75th anniversary before his death in 2020.
She was an accomplished seamstress who began sewing for others at the age of fifteen. She enjoyed sewing for her daughters and granddaughters throughout her life. She would search through magazines for the newest designs and create the same dresses from pictures to make sure they were always well dressed. She worked for the United States Department of Commerce, Census Bureau, and with Batson Animal Clinic before retiring. With the invention of the computer, she went out and bought one and taught herself to use it making memory and picture books for family and her personal travel group.
Her love for travel had her and Charles buy several motor homes throughout their years as they traveled to all 50 states while enjoying a special place in Highlands, NC. It was their love of traveling that is still enjoyed by their family. But her greatest love was for her family. At the age of 80, she took time off from traveling to keep her great grandson from the age of six weeks until he started Pre-K.
She grew up in First Baptist Church of Lindale and later moved her membership to First Presbyterian Church of Rome, to spend Sundays with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Charla Brewster, and her husband, Bill, of Rome, and Beth Aaron, and her husband, Joe, of Sonoma, CA; two granddaughters, Beth Marek, and her husband, Steve, of El Paso, TX, and Jennifer Helbing, of Bradenton, FL; three great grandchildren, Maddox Helbing, Amelia Helbing, and Olivia Helbing, all of Bradenton, FL; her sister, Joyce Gilleland (Dean), Lindale; nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time, but private services will be held in the coming weeks.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to First Presbyterian Church of Rome, 101 E. 3rd Avenue, Rome, GA 30161.
