Robert Merrill Mihlfeith, born April 30, 1952, died April 15, 2022. Merrill was the seventh child of Carl and Josie Mihlfeith and spent his early years on the family farm in Plano. When he was six, the family moved to Egin where they ran the M & J Mercantile until 1973. He spent time riding bikes, swimming in the canals and stocking shelves at the Merc.
Graduated from South Fremont High school in 1970 where he played football, wrestled and served as class officer during his sophomore year.
He worked in construction, the oil field and as a plumber. Between construction jobs in California and Neveda, Merrill came back to the farm. He worked on several ideas for income.
He planted big gardens, constructed steamer trunks, built rustic furniture and worked to maintain the old farm buildings.
Merrill was an avid reader. Reading world history, physics textbooks and political genre. He could speak on lots of subjects and once he got started, it was hard to stop him.
He got his ultimate construction job when he took work with Fluor and KBR as a contract worker in Iraq, 2006.
His overseas work gave him opportunity to travel, and he did. He spent time in Ukraine, Turkey, and Thailand, among other places. These trips brought him to places he read about in all those world history books. He worked for a time in Australia, a lifelong ambition for him. He caught malaria while working in Sudan. His bout with malaria brought him home.
He enjoyed driving his truck around the county roads, visiting with his nephew in Egin and neighbor in Plano. Merrill had projects. These last few summers he spent time shoring up the roof of his shop, where we found him. Rest in Peace Brother.......
Merrill will rest at the Plano Cemetery where a life celebration will be held this summer. Please email [email protected], Subject line Merrill, if interested.
Survived by siblings; Max Mihlfeith, Lisa Mackay Morgan and Patricia M. Hester.
