Pittsford, NY - R. Joseph Naples, MD: Described by his colleagues and friends as a true gentleman who lived elegantly and generously from January 1924 to April 2021. His welcoming smile and brilliant blue eyes will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Predeceased by his first wife Dorothy (Marafino), parents Joseph and Angelina Naples, brothers Ange (Eunice) Naples MD, Christy (Angela) Naples JD, sisters, Phillipine Tulley (Gus), Stella Alessi (Frank), Maria Sarno MD (Bert).
He is survived by his loving wife, Claire (Eiselen) sons, Joseph A. Naples, Robert Naples (Darla), Dr. Grant Eiselen, daughter Elaine Rittler (Chris), grandchildren Matthew Rittler and Alicia Rittler, niece Marie Rose DeVoe (Chris) and nephew Joseph W. Sarno and many Marafino nieces and nephews from Buffalo, NY.
During World War II Joe was assigned to the University of Buffalo Medical School; he continued his military service as a Captain in the Army Medical Corp in the Occupation Army, Bamberg, Germany.
After completing his Radiology residency at Meyer Memorial Hospital, he dedicated his life to medicine, beginning his medical imaging career as the staff radiologist at Sisters' Hospital in Buffalo, NY. During his thirty-one-year tenure as Chief Radiologist at Corning Hospital from 1963 to his retirement in 1994, he initiated radiology subspecialties in mammography, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and CT scanning tripling the practice and adding two additional partners. During his radiology career he was Chairman of the Buffalo Radiological Society, Chairman of the Radiology Section of the NY State Medical Society, Chairman of the Cancer Society of Steuben County and President of the Corning Hospital Medical Staff. Throughout his career he was Chairman of the Medical Educational Services at Corning Hospital.
Joe was an active participant at Corning Country Club and Corning Rotary.
Following retirement in 1998 he moved to Rochester to be closer to his family. He joined Locust Hill Country Club to continue his love of golf. He was a parishioner of St. Louis Church and a member of the Rochester Rotary Club.
In 2008 he met and married Claire Eiselen. They traveled extensively through Europe, Central and South America, the Caribbean and the USA. Together they established the Dr. R. Joseph and Claire Naples Medical Scholarship at the University of Buffalo and enjoyed membership in the University of Rochester George Eastman Circle, Locust Hill Country Club, Canandaigua Yacht Club, Canandaigua Country Club and St Louis Church.
Dr. Naples died in the arms of his loving wife on April 15, 2021 of a metastatic high grade malignant epithelial neoplasm of the parotid gland at his home in Pittsford, NY. Due to COVID-19 a private mass at St. Louis Church and the burial service will take place at the Family Plot in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Buffalo, NY.
